THE IMPACT OF TOXIC FEMINIST IDEOLOGIES ON MARITAL STABILITY AND SINGLE MOTHERHOOD: A STUDY OF LAGOS PROFESSIONAL WOMEN

GENDER AND FEMINIST STUDIES
Chapter One Chapters
NGN 7000

Background of the Study

In recent decades, the feminist movement has gained significant traction globally, advocating for gender equality, women’s empowerment, and social justice. While these ideologies have brought about positive changes in various sectors, some aspects of what is often referred to as "toxic feminism" have raised concerns regarding their impact on family dynamics, marital stability, and child-rearing. "Toxic feminism" refers to a version of feminism that rejects traditional gender roles entirely and often advocates for extreme ideologies that may be perceived as antagonistic towards men and family structures. In urban centres like Lagos, professional women are often at the forefront of this movement, challenging traditional norms while navigating the demands of modern professional and familial roles.

This study seeks to explore the impact of such ideologies on marital stability and single motherhood, particularly focusing on Lagos, where professional women increasingly occupy positions of influence. While feminism has been praised for advocating gender equality, this research aims to critically examine whether certain feminist ideologies have unintended negative consequences on marital relationships, leading to the rise of single motherhood, particularly among women in high-powered professional careers.

Furthermore, the study will investigate how the rise of feminist ideologies in urban Nigeria intersects with the challenges of balancing career ambitions with familial expectations, ultimately assessing the impact on women’s roles as wives and mothers.

Statement of the Problem

While the feminist movement has contributed significantly to gender equality, the rise of what is perceived as toxic feminism has created tension in the traditional family structure in Nigerian society. This study seeks to understand the effects of toxic feminist ideologies on marital stability and single motherhood, especially among professional women in Lagos. The study will address the challenges women face in balancing career ambitions with family responsibilities and how these ideologies affect marital relationships and child-rearing.

Objectives of the Study

To examine the relationship between toxic feminist ideologies and marital stability among professional women in Lagos.

To explore the impact of toxic feminism on the incidence of single motherhood in Lagos.

To assess the challenges professional women face in balancing career and family life, and how these challenges influence their relationships and motherhood.

Research Questions

How do toxic feminist ideologies affect marital stability among professional women in Lagos?

What is the relationship between toxic feminism and the rising trend of single motherhood in Lagos?

How do professional women in Lagos navigate the challenges of balancing career and family, and how does this impact their marital relationships?

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides an in-depth exploration of the intersection between feminist ideologies, marital stability, and single motherhood among professional women in Lagos. Understanding how these ideologies impact family structures will provide insights into how modern women in Nigeria navigate the changing dynamics of work, marriage, and motherhood. The findings will be valuable to gender researchers, policymakers, and family counsellors seeking to promote healthier family relationships while respecting women’s rights and career aspirations.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study will focus on professional women living in Lagos, one of Nigeria’s largest urban centres, where the influence of modern feminist ideologies is most pronounced. The research will explore the views of married professional women and single mothers but will not examine men’s perspectives or the role of men in marital instability and single motherhood. The study will be limited to the professional class and will not address women in rural areas or those in other socioeconomic categories.
