INFIDELITY AND EMOTIONAL TRAUMA: ANALYZING THE PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT ON SPOUSES IN NIGERIA

GENDER AND FEMINIST STUDIES
Chapter One Chapters
NGN 7000

Background of the Study

Infidelity, often viewed as a breach of trust within marriage, remains one of the leading causes of emotional trauma for many Nigerian spouses. Marital fidelity has always been considered a core value in Nigerian society, with strong social expectations that individuals should remain loyal to their spouses. However, the rise of extramarital affairs in both rural and urban settings has brought attention to the significant psychological effects on spouses, particularly in the Nigerian context.

Previous studies have highlighted the devastating emotional consequences of infidelity, including feelings of betrayal, anger, shame, and depression. These emotional responses are often accompanied by a sense of loss, a breakdown of trust, and challenges in maintaining family unity. In Nigeria, where family structures are highly valued, the psychological impact of infidelity extends beyond the couple, affecting children, extended family members, and even entire communities.

Infidelity not only leads to emotional trauma but also often triggers other negative consequences, such as financial strain, social stigma, and marital dissolution. The complexities of dealing with the aftermath of infidelity require a deeper understanding of the psychological processes at play, as well as strategies for emotional healing and reconciliation.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing body of literature on infidelity, there is a gap in understanding the specific psychological effects of infidelity on Nigerian spouses. This research seeks to critically analyse the emotional trauma experienced by spouses in Nigeria as a result of infidelity, identifying the emotional responses, coping mechanisms, and support systems that can aid in the healing process.

Objectives of the Study

To explore the psychological effects of infidelity on Nigerian spouses.

To examine the coping mechanisms employed by spouses in dealing with emotional trauma caused by infidelity.

To assess the role of family and societal support in helping spouses recover from the emotional impact of infidelity.

Research Questions

What are the psychological effects of infidelity on Nigerian spouses?

What coping strategies do spouses employ to deal with the emotional trauma caused by infidelity?

How does family and societal support impact the emotional recovery of spouses affected by infidelity?

Significance of the Study

This study is significant in that it provides valuable insights into the psychological effects of infidelity on Nigerian spouses. By highlighting the emotional trauma experienced by victims of infidelity, the research will contribute to the development of targeted interventions to support affected individuals, such as counselling, family therapy, and social support systems. Furthermore, the findings will inform public health campaigns and social policies aimed at reducing the prevalence of infidelity and promoting healthier marital relationships.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study will focus on Nigerian spouses in urban and semi-urban settings, as these areas tend to have higher rates of infidelity. The research will explore the psychological impact of infidelity on both male and female spouses but will not extensively delve into the legal or economic consequences of infidelity.
